About Ewap Project

The Enhanced Weathering Africa Partnership (EWAP) is a research initiative that aims to spearhead the adoption and scaling of Enhanced Weathering (EW) as a climate solution across Africa.  

What is Enhanced Weathering? Enhanced Weathering (EW) is an emerging carbon capture technology that involves applying finely ground silicate rocks, like basalt, to agricultural soils. This process accelerates natural weathering, capturing atmospheric CO₂ and converting it into stable carbonates. Africa's unique geology, extensive agricultural landscapes, and climate mitigation ambitions provide an ideal environment for EW.

EWAP Objectives

1.  Creating a Knowledge Hub: EWAP will establish a centralized repository  of information and resources aimed at accelerating the research and  development of enhaced weathering in Africa. This hub will conduct essential  sustainability and feasibility studies and disseminate findings to reduce uncertainties around scaling EW in the region. The hub’s resources will  include:

• Stakeholder Webinars, workshops and training sessions.
• Policy briefs to engage with governments and  regional institutions.
• Reports on best practices, research findings, and case studies.
• Short documentary videos and infographics to raise awareness and demonstrate the potential impacts of EW on both carbon sequestration and agricultural productivity.

2.    Fostering a Collaborative Alliance: EWAP will unite key stakeholders across  multiple sectors to create a collaborative platform for the promotion of  EW in Africa. This alliance will include:

• Enhanced Weathering companies  to lead practical implementation.
• Quarry companies for sourcing mine waste such as basalt or other suitable silicate rock.
• Farming associations to integrate EW practices into agriculture.
• Research institutes to provide technical expertise and  sustainability assessment of projects.
• Financial institutions to create funding mechanisms and explore opportunities for climate finance and investments.
