Building Africa’s next generation of enhanced weathering researchers
Build a strong understanding of enhanced weathering and the research questions shaping its application in African contexts.
Learn with EWAP researchers and guest experts through interactive sessions, practical exercises, mentoring and feedback.
Connect across disciplines, exchange knowledge and become part of a growing Africa-centred enhanced weathering research network.
The EWAP Research Fellowship Programme is a selective 12-week, primarily online learning and research programme for final-year students, postgraduate researchers and early-career researchers interested in enhanced weathering and its relevance to African climate, agriculture and sustainability priorities.
The Founding Cohort will bring together up to 10 emerging researchers from different disciplines to learn with EWAP researchers and guest experts, strengthen practical research skills, receive mentoring and feedback, and become part of an Africa-centred international research community.
We welcome Expressions of Interest from final-year undergraduate students, Master’s students, PhD candidates and early-career researchers.
The Fellowship is interdisciplinary by design. We welcome applicants working across environmental and climate science; agriculture, soil science and geochemistry; engineering and monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV); sustainability, economics, business and supply chains; policy and governance; carbon markets and climate finance; and related disciplines that can contribute to enhanced weathering research in African contexts.
Across 12 weeks, Fellows will move from understanding the foundations of enhanced weathering to developing their own research contribution.
Weeks 1–3 | Foundations
Introduction to enhanced weathering, African research contexts and questions that cross science and society.
Weeks 4–6 | Evidence & Research Practice
Critical reading, research design and the evidence needed for credible enhanced weathering research.
Weeks 7–9 | Systems & Implementation
Soils and agronomy alongside MRV, logistics, sustainability, policy, finance and responsible implementation.
Weeks 10–12 | From Learning to Contribution
Mentoring, collaborative work, group presentations, reflection and planning the next research step.
The Fellowship will include expert-led sessions, mentoring and feedback touch points, practical exercises, peer collaboration, and support to develop ideas for publications, proposals and collaborative research.
There is no application or participation fee for the EWAP Research Fellowship Programme.
The Fellowship is an unpaid, primarily online learning and research programme. It does not provide a stipend, salary or travel funding, and participation does not guarantee a future paid or funded role with EWAP.
Fellows who successfully meet the programme requirements will receive a Certificate of Completion.
The first step is to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI).
The EOI asks about your academic or professional background, research interests and motivation for joining the Fellowship. You can also request an invitation to the Information Webinar and submit questions you would like the EWAP team to address during the session.
Applicants selected following the EOI stage will be invited to complete the full application.
